4-day a week program
START Fitness is balanced with indoor and outdoor classes:
Indoor classes: START Fitness indoor training days focus on developing your muscular strength and stamina and overall aerobic conditioning. Exercises include body weight exercises such as push-ups, flutter kicks, vertical leg crunches, and partner-assisted exercises, all designed to create muscle definition.
Outdoor classes: START Fitness running days are focused on developing aerobic efficiency. Designed for individuals of all fitness levels, running days cater to first-time runners as well as marathoners. You will find yourself getting into shape, running faster and further, in a short period of time. Our runs are comprised of a mix of steady-paced endurance runs, interval training, hills, stairs and tempo runs all with boot camp flair.

Business owner and instructor for START Fitness. Nilu Rafsanjani is the owner of BODYwork S.F. Personal Training studio in San Francisco and has been involved in athletics all her life. Born in Tehran, Iran, she learned to swim in the Caspian sea and went on to participate in Gymnastics and competitive swimming. She moved to the U.S. in 1986 and has continued her athletic endeavors in swimming, volleyball, and running. She met SGT Ken in 2000 and was instantly hooked on the hardcore workouts offered by military style training. She became a certified personal trainer in 2005 and has opened up her own studio in 2008. She is currently a long distance road cyclist, a weigh lifter, a runner, and a coach that can help anyone achieve a higher level of fitness and strength.

START Fitness® boot camp classes utilize highly effective physical training techniques practiced by the U.S. military. Complete with body resistance and tubing exercises uniquely arranged to target specific muscle groups, you′ll burn 600-800 calories in 60-minutes! Our military fitness trained instructors will lead you through a series of heart-pounding military calisthenics, cadence calls, and fierce kickboxing drills, all to upbeat music.
We have two locations- one in San Francisco, CA and one in Nashville, TN. Although all three programs combine cardiovascular endurance and muscle building exercises, each location has slightly different hours and days of operation. Our San Francisco, CA program is located on Bush Street and runs from 0600-0700 (6a-7a) Monday through Friday. Our program on Blair Blvd in Nashville, TN runs from 0530-0630 (5:30a-6:30a), Monday through Thursday.
All classes are 60 minutes and are on-going. The START Fitness® program is complete with a fitness test every six months to measure your progress!

START Fitness offers four classes per week, Monday through Thursday from 6:00-7:00AM.
6:00AM class schedule:
Monday: Indoor class that focuses primarily on your upper body muscular strength and overall aerobic conditioning using body weight and resistance training with rubber tubing
Tuesday: Outdoor (weather permitting) ability-group or interval training runs leave from the studio and take place outside throughout Laguna Beach, CA (Ability group runs - Ranging from 2-5 miles over the course of the hour with occasional cadence calling; Interval training runs - Examples: Fartlek runs and Sprint Drills)
Wednesday: Indoor class exercises built on teamwork, obstacle courses, circuit fitness training, and partner-assisted exercises
Thursday: Exercises built on teamwork, obstacle courses, circuit fitness training, and partner-assisted exercises
Note: All outdoor lessons are subject to the discretion of the training staff. Inclement weather plans include aerobic conditioning drills in the studio.

You can purchase a 10 class punchcard; four, eight or 12 weeks; or our ongoing monthly plan (Plan 4). Plan 4 is the best value.

nikki galvan
START Fitness Instructor since 2003 and Program Director for START Fitness Laguna Beach. American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certified personal trainer and TRX Instructor. Nikki has been a self proclaimed runner since she was five years old. She has competed in the US National Championships three years in a row and qualified for the Duathlon World Championships each of those times. At Nationals, she has placed, 2nd, 3rd, and 10th (after 2 flat tires on the bike). At Worlds, she placed in the top 12 each time. These high rankings awarded her the distinction of being Athlete of the Year for 2 years in a row (2002, 2003) for Inside Triathlon Magazine. She has competed in several U.S. cities (NY, all over California, Washington, and Georgia) as well as several international countries (Australia, Switzerland, and Belgium).

what time should i arrive?
Please show up at LEAST ten minutes early on day one to sign our waiver and for a tour.
how does start measure my progress?
Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Fitness Tests are held every six months to help monitor the progress of each recruit. Tests are administered on designated Saturday mornings and are a benefit of the program.
i missed the groupon or living social deal. can i purchase it today?
Unfortunately, you′ve got to catch our deals as they happen. So, stay tuned!
why is it so hard to get a call back and a start date?
Due to the high volume of calls right after a coupon is sold, it may take us a couple of days to get back to you. On average, we are getting about 100-200 calls per day after a coupon hits. If you don′t get through, please try us again. Additionally, it is our intention to provide amazing service to all of our recruits. That is why we don′t overbook our classes.
what is your cancellation policy?
To end your Plan 3 or 4 membership, please give us 30-days notice in writing (email preferred). Email nikki@startfitness.com.
can i get a refund?
START Fitness does not issue refunds for days missed due to illness, vacation, or work unless agreed upon in advance by an authorized START representative.
can i freeze my plan 3 or 4 membership?
Yes, if you are planning to be gone for 10 days or more. Please give us 30 days notice in order to prorate your month and freeze your membership for the duration of your trip.

when can i start?
We start new recruits on Mondays and Wednesdays only. Please email us before dropping in for the first time. We will schedule you for an orientation. Coupon holders are scheduled on a first come (or call in this case), first serve basis. We encourage you to schedule your coupon start date as soon as possible.
will i be obligated to join?
No, your free trial does not obligate you to join the program.

can i combine offers?
Unfortunately, we do not combine offers. For example, two day free trials cannot be combined with a Groupon or LivingSocial Coupon. Another example, if you have already purchased a Groupon, you do not qualify as a new recruit and cannot subsequently use a LivingSocial Coupon, Postcard, Yelp or any other deal.
what about parking?
Street parking only. There are almost always spaces available at that time in the morning.
what should i bring?
Bring a towel and water. Also, bring the receipt print out for your free trial.
at what level should i be in order to join?
On a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being the best), we recommend recruits be at least a 3, before starting the program. This means you have a measurable baseline of fitness- an intermediate level of strength and stamina and no injuries that may prevent you from performing rigorous fitness activities.
is it too hard for me?
The class is hard but not impossible. It is an intermediate to advanced workout. It is designed to motivate you to achieve your fitness objectives. Please let us know if you have any physical limitations of which we should be aware.
can everyone participate?
This program is not right for everyone. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
